MADAM,

June 2014, I received a letter from 21st Century Schools telling me of public meetings concerning ‘alterations’ to Monmouth Comprehensive School.

Right from the start of the first meeting, I felt that I was being fed dubious information and above all I noticed that there were no plans; there was only generated computer pictures.

At that first meeting, I was promised that certain information would be sent to me. When it did not arrive, I decided to send a reminder. It was then that I realised that not only did 21st Century Schools have no plans, but also it didn’t have an address, telephone number, or even its own stationary, but used that of Monmouthshire County Council (MCC). As far as I’m concerned, 21st Century Schools does not exist!

Mr Kneafsey’s letter to the Beacon (26th April) tells us how buildings containing asbestos should be demolished but reads as if taken directly from a manual. The fact that I saw workers wearing asbestos protection after demolition appears to be indirectly confirmed by his letter; it does not deny this. Therefore, if there was asbestos in the rubble it would also have been in the clouds of dust during the demolition. What I had not thought of until I read this letter was that this debris was left and we now have a contaminated site.

The letter says nothing about the clouds of caustic lime that blew over the school where pupils were being educated. Clouds dense enough to turn the workers’ machinery white.

Jeremy Corbyn, loved by both the Labour and Conservative parities, (although for different reasons) told us recently that air pollution destroys 10 per cent of a child’s lung capacity. Although the problem of air pollution has been brought to the attention of MCC on several occasions, those words appear to frighten them to death when used in reference to this site.

MCC must explain why they allowed pupils to remain on the site (all building sites are dangerous) whilst the site was being cleared.

Will they now promise to fit air pollution monitors on the exterior walls of the school?
