I am writing in response to the flippant comments made by our MP in your article headed Monmouth MP argues that ‘driving is an entitlement’ (Beacon 28th August).

His disregard for parliament’s own science and technology select committee and his use of the term ‘environmental fanatics’ show how little regard he has for the 40,000 early deaths due to air pollution in the UK and the £20 billion air pollution costs the NHS yearly.

Like the perceived entitlement cigarette smokers once had to pollute other people’s air his choice of the word shows his contempt not just for the lungs of children, the age group most affected by traffic pollution, but also for the findings and advice of academics and scientists which is not based on biased personal opinion but on years of painstaking research and verifiable fact.

Thank you to Claudia Blair and ACE (Action on Climate Emergency) Monmouth for your work to help with the provision of a reliable and frequent public transport system, it is urgently needed.
