MADAM,

I feel sure those residents of Monmouth who have received a similar response from MCC, to their criticism of the current proposals for the new regulation in Church Street, will agree that the council representative has totally missed the point.

Church Street is a pedestrianised area, with no traffic, and it is totally wide enough for pedestrians, pushchairs, disabled access and the street furniture that was previously allowed, ie the book stalls, cafe furniture and vegetable stands.

I can understand how, on a busy road these would be an issue, however this is not a busy road, it’s a pedestrianised lane. It was a vibrant and much loved area, a popular trip for tourists as well as locals. Now it looks closed, are MCC trying to destroy Monmouth as an attraction?

The council’s response also seems a little muddled, if an overwhelming number of people want to see a vibrant street scene how can they also say, as they have, an overwhelming number want to see them removed? We are not talking about a few A-boards, we are talking about the display frontage of the shops.

I urge the council to cease sending such patronising responses to the criticism of their electorate and start dealing with the actual circumstances responsibly.
