MADAM,

The outcome of the referendum result meant that big changes at the top of government were inevitable.

Although Theresa May and I were on opposite sides of the EU argument, I have huge confidence in her abilities and her commitment to deliver Brexit successfully, which is why I voted for her myself in the leadership contest.

I also welcome the major cabinet reshuffle. There is a need for a fresh approach over the next four years, with many talented colleagues unfortunately having to make way for others.

I am pleased that as well as leaving the EU, there is a renewed commitment to helping the most disadvantaged in society. Contrary to what some believe, this has always been an important part of Conservative thinking and I am glad it is going to be put at the heart of government policy-making.
