IT was a lucky escape for one Monmouth man when his car ended up in the River Wye just past midnight on Saturday (31st March) at the town’s rowing club.

Gwent Police confirmed that a man was inside the car when it entered the river however he was able to escape and the car was recovered shortly after.

Gwent Police officers and South Wales Fire and Rescue were called to the scene and the silver Volkswagon Polo was pulled from the river by a recovery vehicle from Lanes Garage.

In an unrelated incident Gwent Police received a report of a road traffic collision between a car and a campervan on the A466 in Redbrook. The car left the area and officers arrested four people shortly after on suspicion of aggravated taking a vehicle without consent.

Following investigation, three people have been released with no further action taken, and one person has been released under investigation for document offences.
