John Bray is from Undy and has written a sonnet for the shop, where he has been volunteering with Cancer Research Wales.
“Volunteering is something I want to do both for myself and others. I want to put something back as kind of thank you for the lifesaving treatment I have received which on a personal level will makes me feel better and also to help future developments that will benefit others,” said John.
“I have been volunteering in the Chepstow shop on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons for about three months now.”
“I don’t know if it’s because we who work there have been touched by cancer which alters the dynamics, but it’s a beautiful space to work in.”
Commenting on John’s sonnet, Dina Aicardi-Lewis, who manages the Cancer Research Wales shop said: “John’s a very well-liked volunteer here at Chepstow. This is a lovely gesture by him and it’s now framed and takes pride of place in the shop window for all to see.”
The sonnet is called ‘Our shop-fighting cancer’ by John Bray:
“A shop of colour, playing many roles,
In fighting cancer’s unforgiving wrath
Monies for research are primary goals,
A place of calm set against cancer’s path
A beautiful shop there for all to see,
Pre-loved items exhibited with care
An oasis of peace is there for free,
So, inviting shoppers, to buy and share,
For those hurt by cancer’s spiteful jest,
This is a safe space to volunteer and mend,
Engaging with patron, browser and guest,
A place of charity for us to tend,
Let us beat cancer before all else fails,
Thanks for your support,
Cancer Research Wales.
