VILLAGERS in Llangybi have all rallied together in their mission to raise funds to fix the ceiling of the local church.

Last year above the west end gallery, a large triangular crack suddenly appeared in the old curved plaster ceiling of the nave over the pipe organ.

After numerous professional inspections, it was revealed the rest of the large ceiling might be at risk.

Work on the ceiling could top £100,000.

In a bid to save the ceiling a campaign was launched and has received backing from the community and local MP David Davies.

Last month an evening of dancing organised by the Burchell family from Llangybi and an event at Sessions House, Usk raised £900 for the repairs.

Reverend Pamela Love said: "It is very heart-warming that local people are taking their own initiatives in helping us keep the fund moving upwards.

"We hope we shall soon be saying goodbye to the now dismantled parts of the pipe organ that has been in the church since 1933. We hope to replace it with a smaller pipe organ of more historic significance once all the work is finished.

"We continue to worship each Sunday and hold meetings in the only space we have that is free from the scaffolding."

A concert of songs and readings by Village Voices will take place this Saturday (28th March) at Llangybi Village Hall. Audience members are asked to give a donation to the church fund.

An auction to sell two open return first class train tickets donated by David Davies MP, is still ongoing. Bidding will end on Friday 1st May
