Despite a summer which has not been kind to gardeners all the visitors to Chepstow flower show were very impressed by the number and quality of the exhibits.

The club were delighted that Town Councillors Mr. and Mrs. Dovey, Mr. Heywood, Mr. Le Peltier and Mrs. Robbins were able to attend.

The Mayor, Councillor Dale Rooke presented a number of prizes:

The Kelly Shield for the highest combined score in the vegetable and flower sections was won by Steve Hoare who was the outright winner in the vegetable section.

The Mike Dobbs Challenge Shield for the best exhibit in the vegetable section was awarded to Norman Chamberlain.

Caroline Duchet received the Mayor’s Cup for the best entry in the Flower Section where she was the overall winner.

Janet Hoare won the Sue Roberts Trophy with the most points in the Flower Arranging and the Gillian Lott Trophy for the most points in the Cookery section.

The Garden Club Trophy for the best exhibit in the Flower Arranging section went to Anne Dally.

Nick Wood won the Wilma Bremner Shield for the best Salad Ingredient exhibit.

The Garden Club Cup for the best exhibit in the Hobbies section went to Nick Harris.

Caroline Duchet won the Club Salver for the best exhibit in the show.

The Club are very grateful to Mr. Tom and Mrs Judy Challoner who judged the Vegetable and Flower sections, Mrs Joan Ryrie who judged the Flower Arranging and Hobbies sections and Mrs. Del Belcher who had to sample all the entries in the cookery section.

The children from the local primary schools brought the plants they had grown from seed to be judged both individually and to receive points for their school in the Inter Schools Gardening Challenge. This is sponsored by Chepstow Garden Centre who supply compost and Chepstow Town Council who provide funding for the project.

First Prize went to Ben Fisher from The Dell School for his tomato plant. Joint second prizes were won by pupils from Pembroke Road School; Keegan Halford and Alex Keating, and joint third prizes were awarded to Zoe Wood Archie Whittaker Jackson.

The Challenge Shield was won by the Dell School whose combined entries were worth 56.5 points, with Pembroke Road runners-up and St. Mary’s RC coming third.
