Monmouth's ambitious pupil-led Literary Festival is in full swing as events take place throughout the town.

Organised by a committee of teenagers from Monmouth School, Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls and Monmouth Comprehensive, the four-day cultural event kicked off on Monday (22nd June).

Tonight (Wednesday 24th June) at the Savoy Theatre, the Poet Laureate, Dame Carol Ann Duffy appears alongside musician John Sampson to provide an evening of words and atmospheric music.

Tuesday night saw former Monmouth School pupil Eddie Butler, now a successful BBC correspondent, talking about his book "The Head of Gonzo Davies" in his own inimitable style.

"I am nearly tempted to say that I, not so very young, and the organising pupils, full of the enterprise of youth, are part of the same rearguard – a retreating effort to will people to carry on reading (and buying) books," he said.

The festival, a collaboration between the three schools – Haberdashers' School for Girls, Monmouth School and the Comprehensive School – ends on Thursday 25th June, with a "Meet the Authors" event at the Shire Hall, 1-3pm, and an evening with Owen Sheers, 7.30-9pm at The Blake Theatre.

Abergavenny-raised writer, Owen Sheers will be introducing his new novel "I Saw a Man".

His first book, "Resistance", was translated into 10 languages and adapted into a film and "The Dust Diaries", his Zimbabwean non-fiction narrative, won the Welsh Book of the Year prize.

Tickets are still available from the three schools, Rossitor Books and Monmouth Library. Tickets for the evening with Carol Ann Duffy are available from the Savoy Theatre, price £5 and £2.
