THE National Gardens Scheme (NGS) is looking for more people to open up their gardens for the charity.

The NGS runs the Gardens Open for Charity scheme which asks garden owners to help raise money by sharing their pride and joy with enthusiastic gardeners.

This year twenty seven proud garden owners opened for the NGS in Gwent, and organisers are inviting more to get involved.

Seven-time openers, Sue and Ian, say: “It is so rewarding to see so many people come along and admire your hard work and your imagin-ation.

“We have a large garden, but it really doesn’t matter if it is quite small because it is what is there that is important, not the quantity.

“The compliments and comments that you get from the visitors makes all the work so worthwhile. We feel really elated at the end of an Open Garden Day.”

NGS county organiser Joanna Kerr is always very happy to help potential openers with all sorts of advice.

“Our experience over the years has gone a long way to ensuring that new openers can really enjoy the day,” she said.

“Other openers are always ready to pass on their tips and tricks.

“The NGS centrally provides all types of publicity and signage; the annual listing of gardens – ‘The Yellow Book’ – is a best seller every year and the NGS website (www.ngs.org.uk) also helps the promotion of gardens.”
