SIR, As party leader of the British Empire Party (BEP) I am very concerned about the comments Natural Resources Wales (NRW) made in the Monmouthshire Beacon. I was a town councillor for Monmouth for eight years and I have also initiated policy 25 flood plains. Hundreds of houses have been built upon real flood plains including the new hospital at the time I was town councillor. The Welsh Government wouldn't take any notice and the Rockfield side of town was flooded to the extent that ITV and BBC recorded the event here in Monmouth. I live on Rockfield Road and I had to wade through water to get to the Green Dragon to meet the ITV and BBC team but I only got as far as the hospital as the water was up to my chest and I had to turn back, failing to get to my destination. Mrs Claire McCorkindale, planning adviser for NRW states that if ground levels are raised to ensure the development is flood free, in this event there will be increased flood risk elsewhere. She doesn't seem to know what she's talking about. Dixton Road doesn't flood, the main A40 bypass is just alongside Dixton Road and opposite the River Wye. The Wye used to flood in the early 1960s but when the new A40 dual carriageway was built it no longer flooded. Mrs McCorkindale also states the NRW objection warns Monmouthshire County Council's (MCC) planning committee, it is not for the NRW to tell MCC planning committee that they object to planning. When you first put planning in for housing etc, it goes to town council planners, then to MCC and then if they say no to planning it goes to the Welsh Government for them to decide. This is a very funny situation. Why haven't NRW said anything about all the other planning applications? A premium hotel (60 bed) at Hadnock Road, Monmouth (floodplain), Rockfield Road (flood plain) houses at Rockfield Road Estate (flood plain). I want to know why Mrs McCorkindale has not mentioned these other applications? I would like a meeting with Mrs McCorkindale to discuss this serious situation and why after 12 months has this lady interfered. As party leader I started a petition in March 2014 and it was 73 per cent for the future of Monmouth planning. There will not be any more planning whatsoever as Monmouth is a flood plain area.
