A LEADING Monmouthshire county councillor has posted an update on the current situation regarding the flood clear-up.

Conservative leader Cllr Richard John posted a flooding update this morning at 7am, including news that the town council appeal has passed £112,000.

He stated: “Monnow Street has reopened to traffic this morning. There is an appeal to residents not to park on Monnow Street unless absolutely necessary, as many spaces are being used by those affected by flooding to clear out their properties.

“Most of the surface water in Monmouth has been pumped away. There will be an exhibition van called the ‘Floodmobile’ in the cattle market car park, Monmouth, today (Wednesday) from 9.30am-3pm.

“It’s a mobile demonstration unit showing dozens of Property Flood Resilience measures which can help better protect your home from flooding or make recovery faster and easier if flood water does enter.

“Bridges sadly flooded and have announced that they will not be open and operational until the New Year. They are aiming to be open by early to mid January.

All schools are open as usual apart from Osbaston which was flooded.

“The swimming pool at Abergavenny Leisure Centre will be closed until the end of the month due to storm damage to the ceiling.

“Mitchel Troy Recycling Centre will be open every day this week from 8am to 4pm but you do now need to book a slot online.

“A lot of clothing and bedding has been donated (no more required please) but if anyone needs any, it can be accessed from the Shire Hall.

“Triwall have placed a supply of boxes, paper, and gloves outside their reception on Wonastow Road and urged people to take what they need.

“Monmouth Methodist Church has a supply of hats, scarves, coats, wellies, socks, jumpers and blankets open from 10am to 6pm today, tomorrow and Friday.

“On Tuesday, the Welsh Government made a statement on Storm Claudia and confirmed they have invited applications from local authorities for funding to repair any flood prevention infrastructure.

“The Minister announced that Welsh Government and Monmouthshire County Council have met to discuss emergency funding for those affected but has not yet announced the package of support and how it will be accessed.

“We hope this will be a priority as many need this support NOW so they can start to rebuild.

“All local bus services are operating as normal.

“The Town Council’s justgiving appeal has surpassed £110,000 and you can donate on the appeal page.

Yesterday the council began a three-day round of knocking on all 600 doors of those affected by Storm Claudia in Monmouthshire to offer support.

“The Shire Hall is open 9am-5pm everyday for those who have been affected by Storm Claudia flooding and require assistance.
