FAMILIES are being encouraged to step out for a walk during half term as part of Ramblers Cymru's Big Welsh Walk, which runs throughout May.

To help people on their way, the walking experts have created free activity sheets that families can download and take out on their ramble.

Not only is walking good exercise for the family, it's also a great way to tempt children away from the computer or television, with the Scramblers activity sheets helping turn a normal walk around the park into a family adventure.

The Big Welsh Walk in Monmouthshire is at the Wonders of Whitestone Wood.

It covers three quarters of a mile and takes in three viewpoints.

It also serves as a starting point for longer walks to Duchess Ride and other woodland walking trails.

The start point can be found at Whitestone Wood car park, which is around 10 miles north of Chepstow.

Ramblers Cymru director, Angela Charlton said: "Half term is a great time to step out and enjoy a walk with your family, making the most of the warmer weather and longer days.

"Heading out for a walking adventure is the perfect way to spend some quality time together as a family, as well helping everyone to get fit and stay healthy.

"As part of our Big Welsh Walk we are offering families fun, free downloadable activity sheets to complete while they're out walking.

"Take your pick from a wacky game of bingo where youngsters have to spot muddy footprints and animals or complete the rainbow ramble, looking out for colourful objects and collecting interesting items to turn into a collage at the end of the walk.

"For older children we've even got an activity sheet with top tips on being a walk leader.

"Let them lead the way, draw a map and sketch interesting things they see as they walk."
