FOLLOWING a year of fundraising the community of Trellech Primary School launched The Daily Mile last Friday (7th September).

In order for pupils to access the grounds throughout the year, whatever the weather, it was necessary to develop a track. Through the support of the schools PTFA, parents, Welsh Water and Trellech United Community Council the installation took place over the Summer thanks to PDJ Price Construction.

A fun afternoon took place where the fundraisers were thanked for their support, Paul Sullivan (Mon Sport Development) spoke to share the message of the work being done across Monmouthshire; Trellech being the 15th school across the authority to commit to the Daily Mile. Sport Wales were also in attendance to witness and provide coverage of the launch.

Sports Development Officer for Monmouthshire County Council, Paul Sullivan said: “The Daily Mile is a fantastic initiative to help promote physical activity and wellbeing in our schools. Our team have been actively promoting it for quite some time now and have also embedded it in to our holiday provision, The Monmouthshire Games, since its launch in 2016.

“The fact Trellech, as a school and community, have worked so hard to raise the funds to make completing the daily mile possible is a credit to all involved. Across Monmouthshire we have seen a significant increase in the amount of schools taking part in this initiative with 15 primary schools (50 per cent) now signed up. If your school would like to begin the Daily Mile please feel free to contact a member of our team via [email protected] where we will be happy to help”.

The track was officially opened by Debbie Stenner, a parent from the school who was instrumental in supporting the health and wellbeing leader Mrs Peacock in sourcing funding and contractors for the project.

Following an enjoyable run/ walk/ jog around the track by pupils, staff and parents they were treated to a healthy fruit box kindly donated by Waitrose.Pictures courtesy of Chris Thomas
