STUDENTS from Wyedean Sixth Form experienced a rare treat when visiting Oxford University last week, when they were shown around by Malala Yousafzai.
The Wyedean students were visiting Lady Margaret Hall College with Director of Sixth Form, Johnathan Lane, and despite being well aware that Malala attended Oxford, they didn’t realise that the Nobel Peace Prize winner would be the one to escort them around the university.
“It was an enormous privilege to meet such an inspirational figure,” Mr Lane reflected. “The students were able to ask Malala about life at university, about studying at Oxford and about what they can do to enhance their own university applications.”
Wyedean Sixth Form regularly collaborates with Lady Margaret Hall College, Oxford, as a way of inspiring the next generation of would-be applicants. In addition to meeting Malala, the students received a lecture from Marrium Khan and were put through their paces in one of Oxford University’s renowned tutorial sessions.
Year 12 student, Lily Motson, added, “It was a great way to learn exactly what sets Oxford apart from other universities and to get a genuine feel for what it would be like to go there. Talking to undergraduate students themselves about what to expect and how to apply made the prospect of considering going to Oxford or another top university a lot less daunting.”
For those who wish to broaden their horizons, Wyedean Sixth Form is still taking applications for September 2018.
