Intrigued passers-by were treated to a spectacle in Usk last Friday as Diabetes UK held a roadshow in memory of Lisa Howells who passed away last year.

With the chance to test their fitness on exercise bikes, while learning about the risks and symptoms of type 1 and 2 diabetes from dedicated volunteers, the roadshow which is touring the country has been on hand to offer help and support to visitors, while answering questions.

Information was also provided on eating well and being active for people at risk and also those living with the condition.

The store was opened by Lisa’s father Graham, who was on hand to cut the ribbon for the refurbished store.

Diabetes UK Cymru’s Director Dai Williams said: “This was a really fitting way to pay our respects to Lisa and raise awareness of the seriousness of diabetes. It was also deeply touching to get the chance for our volunteers and staff to speak to so many people in the area who had known Lisa, particularly her father Graham.

“By finding out their risk of getting Type 2 diabetes, the people who came along to the Know Your Risk Roadshow have taken the first step towards doing something about it. For many people, eating more healthily and getting more exercise can delay or stop them from getting Type 2 diabetes.

“Type 2 diabetes is very serious and if untreated, it can cause a host of complications including heart attacks or strokes. There are changes you can make today to improve your health and even save your life.”

Alyson Meade, Manager of The Co-operative food store in Usk, said: We are pleased to have had the opportunity to work with Diabetes UK and Weatherhead Shop Design to organise and host a diabetes Roadshow event in the memory of our former colleague, Lisa. The event was a great success and we would like to say a special thank you to Lisa’s family, and the community, for their participation, encouragement and support.”
