FIVE-year-old Henry’s novel approach to a homework project on dinosaurs has not only wowed his teachers and schoolmates but won the plaudits of a well-known TV presenter.

Henry, a pupil at The Dell Primary School in Chepstow, was given the choice of tasks to follow up at home and decided to write a song which he then performed in a video entitled ’Dinosaur Rap’ shot on a mobile phone.

He also played bass and synth solo, with his dad responsible for loops and production.

When Andy Day, presenter of the BBC’s Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures saw the clip on Facebook he sent Henry the message: “Haha! Absolutely brilliant!!! An inspired rap! Well done Henry.”

Henry’s dad Nick Langston, a musician and songwriter, explained: “A week ago I gave Henry his first piano lesson, having been trying to get him to play for over a year! The next day he came up with a bass riff and we then thought it would make a good tune for something. By chance we got the school’s home learning tasks soon after and he decided on a dinosaur rap as they are studying dinosaurs and he is loving the subject. He came up with some words with his granddad and we recorded the tune in my home studio.

“Henry played the bass riff on the song and then recorded the rap really quickly. I was amazed at how good he was. Then I said we need a synth solo in the middle and he came up with that and played it too!

“Finally, that same day, we went outside with a mobile phone and came up with some funny ideas for the video.

“Henry had been given a 30cm tall dinosaur as a present so we used that. The challenge was to make it look much bigger. The video mostly involved me chasing him down a country road holding the dinosaur and a mobile phone whilst getting strange looks from passers by!”

Once the video was finished, Nick posted it on Facebook. “By chance we have a friend who knows Andy Day and she shared the video with him,” he said.

“We also sent it to Henry’s teacher Mrs Adams who was so impressed that she played it twice to the whole of Year 1 that same day. They went crazy for it apparently. And then on Friday he came home and said that the whole of the school had seen it in assembly and he had to come up to the front and get a certificate!

“Henry is usually not one to be the centre of attention but seems to have enjoyed all of this.”

But it seems he hasn’t yet set his sights on a career in the performing arts.

“When I asked him if he has any current plans for a career in film or music his answer was a very simple ‘No Daddy, I go to school!” he said.
