DELL Primary School pupil Anna Boyle has won the Welsh under-9s chess championships.

The competition involved children from all over Wales and took place on Saturday 21st March.

Anna won her first five matches and drew the last, scoring five and a half out of six. She was the winner by half a point ahead of Ethan Chung from Rougement, Newport.

Richard Stevenson, who mentors the chess team, said: "The Dell has had winners in the Welsh Rapidplay Championships held in December, but this is the first time we've had a winner at the more prestigious Welsh Championships.

"Anna is highly competitive, works at her game, and it's great to see her rewarded with the under-9 title.

"Let's hope her form continues when she plays for the school in the team competitions coming up in the summer term, including the under 11 open national finals at Uppingham public school, where a team of six from The Dell will be playing the strongest schools from England and Wales."
