MADAM,

Passing the news stand today I read that David Davies, our MP, has had death threats as a result of his stance on the child immigration situation. What a sad state of affairs. I must with-hold my name, for fear of reprisals, verbal, written or otherwise; it has been bad enough to own up to being a Brexiteer.

However, I am compelled to respond to Mr Short’s letter, (Whose views does David Davies represent? 26th October) which clearly states that Mr Davies does not represent the view of Mr Short, and he questions whose view is being represented, as our MP.

Through your paper I would like to reassure our MP that his views do echo mine, and most of my friends with whom I have discussed this matter. I have all but given up watching television, and just scan the newspaper, as most news is acrimonious and depressing, but I did see photographs of "child immigrants" with faces hidden behind blankets, holding up hands which certainly were not those belonging to children!

Mr Davies has stated the reasons behind his support for, what I understand, dental screening to confirm the ages of the children. If the ‘children’ are genuine, what is there to fear? If I was a refugee and wanted asylum in this country, and was asked to sit in a dentist’s chair to guarantee my entry, I would be fighting to be head of the queue! Much was said about families who were waiting to be re-united with their estranged children. Were these families hopping with impatience at the airports/ ferry terminals to welcome their young ones? Such images would tell a different story than those of youths whose identities were being protected. Why?

One is accused of racism if one dares to question a compassionate and open arms welcome to our country. This is not true. I would like an answer to the question of how many people our already overpopulated country can sustain: all of Africa, Afghanistan, and so on? If a simple dental check will sort out the genuine child refugees from opportunists of older ages, why can we not accept the validity of it?

It seems to me that many people let emotions rule their thoughts. Thank you Mr Davies for having the courage to argue the facts in a reasoned and considered manner.
