A LISTED building will be sold to generate money for an ongoing council schools project.
Cemetery Lodge in Chepstow, which is a Grade II-listed building and owned by Monmouthshire County Council (MCC), will now be sold on the open market to help fund the ongoing 21st Century Schools project, which is reported on Page 1.
Following the retirement of the cemetery’s sexton, the building has been declared ‘surplus’ by the council.
A report which went in front of MCC’s cabinet last Wednesday (6th September) stated that “due to the property sitting vacant, the condition of it is deteriorating and will shortly start to become a liability to the council.
At the meeting councillors agreed to the recommendations set out in the report. The sale of the building will support the 21st Century School scheme and the requirement to generate £40 million in capital receipts to support this.
