MADAM,
We want to ensure that everyone who helped make this month’s Christmas Candlelit Event in the town such a brilliant success, is fully thanked.
As the traffic fell silent, Father Christmas appeared in his sleigh, festooned with lights, in the dark archway of Old Monnow Bridge. He swept past the crowds and led the whole procession up Monnow Street to the Shire Hall. Those waiting on the cobbles could just make out the distant sounds of O Come All Ye Faithful, but as the huge procession each person clutching a glow stick ’candle’, approached, the familiar warm sounds of Monmouth Comprehensive’s Wind Players became clearer and the voices behind them, fuller.
Once on stage, Osbaston School’s Penny Whistlers, accompanied by strings and percussion made a sparky, cheerful and expertly played introduction to the night. Next came Overmonnow School’s 42 strong choir. Their three multi-part carols, sung word-perfect were also met with roars of approval and loud applause.
Rev Jonathan Greaves’ talk about the double significance of the humble candy stick hanging on our Christmas trees, gave us sweet food for thought, as we crunched the miniature candies we were all given. Our voices joined the rich sounds of the town band playing O Little Town of Bethlehem and Away in a Manger, before Rahon and Friends burst into life with a brilliant folk input that got the crowd bopping.
All this time the youngest children had been clambering, one by one onto Santa’s sleigh for a quiet chat and to receive their present, all beautifully organised by Monmouth Rotary. A kind partnership, of Helmet Hair and The Punch House meant that snow floated continuously down over the whole magical scene.
Our wonderful town band completed the evening and their performance with We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Thank you all.
The mayor, Chris Munslow and all the town councillors are particularly grateful to Les, Marilyn, Robbie and Olive who were essential help in keeping everybody safe. with their stewarding and Terry, the cool-headed director of operations!
Having thanked all these amazing volunteers (and hopefully not forgotten any) we wish to thank the professionals who went well above what was expected of them: the police, St John’s Ambulance, Aileen, Claire and the Shire Hall staff, and especially our own Jane Lloyd.
More thanks to MCC grounds department for installing the Christmas trees and Robert Price for their help as well.
If you were a resident, shop keeper or driver delayed by the road closure, we thank you for your patience.
Merry Christmas and best wishes.
Monmouth Town Council
