Pupils from Chepstow Comprehensive School's learning zone have received a cheque for £250 from Dee Griffith, managing director of Herbert Lewis stores.
The money has been collected over the course of the past year from each 5p plastic bag purchased by customers at the store.
Last year, the shop donated to a primary school in Caldicot, but after liaising with Angela Jones, progress leader for careers and the community at Chepstow Comprehensive, Dee got on board to support the school.
The learning zone will use the money to support TextNow pupils who are in need of additional help reading.
"We are overwhelmed to be given the opportunity to buy more resources," said learning zone coordinator Elena Goddard.
"Our pupils meet every morning to pair up with sixth formers for help reading.
"We try to find out from students what it is they find interesting and want to read before we spend money. This even includes magazine subscriptions and autobiographies as well as audiobooks and material for our ipads and kindles."
Dee said: "It is incredible what the school is doing here. This was never available when I was at school and we are just glad to help."
Herbert Lewis is already collecting for its next charitable donation. Dee is asking readers to help the shop decide on a cause, so if you think you know of a charity or a group that can benefit from £250, contact the store.
