MADAM,

If I might correct a small but important error in the information supplied by Councillor Sue White in your article on the Syrian refugees. It was not the County Council which took in the Ugandan Asians but the original Monmouth Borough Council in around 1973. The leading light in moving this was Councillor Roger Smith, who is one of the handful of Borough Councillors still happily surviving.

There is quite a difference between the two councils for the sixteen Aldermen and Councillors of Monmouth Borough Council were Monmouth people elected by Monmouth residents. Although with the power to build council estates and run most of the town services we were all unpaid volunteers.
