MONMOUTH Male Voice Choir proudly took to the field to sing before last Saturday’s Wales v Scotland international match at the Principality Stadium.
The choir was selected to perform at Wales’s first home match in the RBS 6 Nations by WRU Musical director Dr Haydn James.
More than 40 members of the choir sung the usual rugby favourites such as Sosban Fach, Hymns and Arias and Cwm Rhondda as well as the two national anthems.
Pendyrus Male Choir joined Monmouth to make a combined choir of 120
singers.
The choirs were led out on to the pitch by Monmouth’s oldest member Mike Brown who is well known in the town and has played more than 500 matches for Monmouth Rugby Club.
Dr Haydn James said of the choir: “The singing was very good indeed, with both choirs working well together to produce a thrilling sound.”
Choir chairman Huw Edwards said: “Singing at the Wales v Scotland international was a wonderful experience. It was amazing to walk out on to the pitch and perform before more than 70,000 in the stadium with millions watching on TV.
"You can watch it again and again of the choir’s website: www.monmvc.org.uk.
“The BBC match commentator said the singing of the anthems in Cardiff was ‘one of the finest sounds in sport.’
“The whole day was unforgettable: the rehearsal, the band of the Royal Welsh, seeing the players line up just in front of us, the emotion of the anthems and the singing on the coach home and in the pub.
“We had to train hard for an event like this and we owe a lot to our conductor and accompanist Ian Russell and Helen Stidoph.
“It’s worth all the rehearsal time and we really hope this experience will attract new members to Monmouth Male Voice Choir.”
The choir rehearses every Monday and Thursday at 7.30pm at Monmouth Conservative Club.
New members are very welcome.
