A CHEPSTOW, Caldicot and district fundraising committee is celebrating raising £225,000 after 52 years of supporting Cancer Research UK.

The Chepstow and Caldicot fundraising group started raising money for Cancer Research UK in 1961. The £225,000 has been raised by a myriad of different events and donations from local people over the years, as well as generous donations made in lieu of flowers at funerals in the area. The presentation of a recognition certificate was made by the local fundraising manager, Maria Parker, to John and Georgina Kitto who have been volunteering for 29 and 30 years respectively.

John Kitto, the current treasurer of the Chepstow committee, said: "We want to thank past and present members of the committee since its formation in 1961, together with members of the community who have supported and generously donated time, effort and money enabling us to reach this magnificent milestone figure of £225,000. The generous nature of people from this region is the main reason we have been so successful in making this amazing sum of money which has made a great impact towards finding a cure for all cancers."

Maria Parker, Cancer Research UK's local fundraising manager for Chepstow, Caldicot and the surrounding area, said: "I would like to thank the Chepstow and Caldicot Local Committee and their supporters for the fantastic amount they have raised and the massive contribution they have made to our vital work over the past 52 years.

"Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so. We have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters, without whom we would not be able to fund our vital research."
