CITV presenter and sports coach Sarah Thomson will be running the 870 miles along the Welsh Coast path from Chester to Chepstow to raise money for UK charity ShelterBox. Sarah is a presenter on CITV’s Bear Gryll’s Survival School, will start the route on 11th October.

She will attempt to finish the route in 30 days almost entirely self-supported, aiming to beat the fastest known time of 40 days.

Carrying a tent, stove and kit on her back during the endurance event, she will restock her food supply at various checkpoints. The distance and elevation of the path is the equivalent of running 33 back-to-back marathons whilst summiting Kilimanjaro 60 times.

ShelterBox is a UK-based charity that provide survival and building supplies to disaster-stricken regions. Since being founded in 2000, the charity has helped more than a million people rebuild their lives.

Sarah said: “Starting in mid October, I’m expecting some pretty savage weather conditions.

“As beautiful as Wales is, I didn’t want an easy challenge. I wanted to be pushed way out of my comfort zone and be put in a position where I will have to work hard to keep spirits strong.

“The distance and weather is going to be tough work, but with ShelterBox in mind, I can be assured that what people are going through in war zones and disaster areas is far worse. I’m taking myself to a place of discomfort to try and help become a big part of relieving other peoples discomfort.”

The charity provides ‘ShelterBoxes’ which contain a family-sized tent and a range of practical tools and utensils which include solar lights, water purification equipment and thermal blankets to provide temporary shelter in a disaster zone.

The charity also provide ‘ShelterKits’, which include a selection of materials including ropes, fixings and heavy-duty tarpaulins that can be used to make emergency shelters, repair buildings and create the foundations for new homes.

Shelterbox has provided help and aid in response to

the worlds’s most devastating disasters including Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, Japan’s 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the floods that wreaked havoc in Malawi and Malaysia in 2015, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013, and the two massive earthquakes that shook Nepal in 2015.

It is currently on standby to help families displaced by expected military action to reclaim Mosul in Iraq from IS control, which may cause up to one million refugees.

Sarah is currently half-way towards her fundraising target of £2,000.
