David and Claire Thompson from Chepstow have raised thousands of pounds over the past few years. The couple even donated their wedding present funds to their chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Care. David said: "In 2010 I lost my father to cancer and Macmillan provided a great deal of support for him and that strengthened my resolve to keep going with my fundraising. Shortly afterwards Claire's father was diagnosed with Cancer and he has been helped by Macmillan ever since." Claire and David were delighted to be nominated for their fundraising efforts as one of The Independent's 'Happy List', invented as an antidote to the 'Rich List', celebrating a wholly different set of values. "We were totally surprised and delighted. It's so amazing to have what you are trying to do recognised," said David. After having climbed Kilimanjaro, trekked in the Sahara, Iceland and Peru, the pair have decided to keep on challenging themselves, aiming at raisin £50,000, enough to fund a Macmillan nurse for a year. They are asking local businesses and members of the public to join them in a charity zip wire challenge in Chepstow on 6th September to help them achieve the £50k. "If all the reserve places are filled the zip wire challenge alone will make £15,000. We have also just held a ball and are running marathons and doing the Moroccan Three Peaks challenge in September," said David. The energetic duo are pictured here starting their ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. "We have 100 slots to fill so we are looking for individuals, families, groups of friends to take part and have a fun day out – the venue is easily to get to, has a great viewing area, restaurant and bar to make a fun day out." To join them and help raise money and awareness all you need to do is pay a £20 registration fee and raise £50 in sponsorship. The event is an ideal team building activity.
