A NEW recycling service will be rolled out to residents from the 1st September this year.
Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) will now start charging businesses for red and purple recycling bags.
According to the council the treatment of this type of recycling is no longer free to the council, and MCC will now charge to provide the service to businesses across the county.
Businesses are being asked to register and purchase business recycling bags at One Stop Shops in Monmouthshire from Tuesday 1st September.
According to the council, business rates do not include the charge for collection or disposal of business waste. Businesses are not permitted to use Monmouthshire’s domestic waste collection service or household waste recycling centres.
To use the service businesses have to pay an annual registration fee of £25.
Carl Touhig, Waste Recycling and Business Manager at MCC said: “Many businesses are unaware of the legislation around waste management and our recent leaflet explains the law and their responsibilities. Some businesses believe their waste collection and their use of the civic amenity sites are services provided by the council but this is not the case. It is illegal to take business waste to civic amenity sites and businesses have a statutory duty of care to ensure their waste is collected and disposed of properly”.
