Andy, who lives nearby in Lydney, has not only achieved European and world athlete status in the short time that he has competed as a paratriathlete, but can now proudly add paralympic gold medallist to his ever-expanding record of achievement.
The branch, in the heart of Chepstow, has undergone a refurbishment as part of the society’s commitment to accessible services on the high street, helping to ensure that the needs of members are met both now and in the future.
An important aspect of the transformation consists of improved facilities for disabled members, with full disabled access including automatic doors and a lowered wheelchair-friendly counter.
Deb Chiswell, Chepstow Branch Manager, said: “We were thrilled to have such an inspiring person as Andy to help us cut the ribbon at the official opening party, and it was such a joy to see so many new faces at the branch who had a chance to try on Andy’s gold medal.
“Like many people locally, I’m in awe of his achievements in the face of adversity, and I’m pleased that he was able to come along to help affirm the society’s commitment to face-to-face, personable service for all of our customers without exception.”
Andy Lewis commented on the need for local businesses to do more for disabled customers, saying: “I find older shops are just not accessible to wheelchair users like me. However, accessibility isn’t just about wheelchair users, it’s about businesses being accessible for everyone.”
He also gave away some details about his future plans, commenting: “I’m really enjoying giving my all to training as I’m aiming to retain my European and world titles this year.
My long term goal is to become double paralympic champion in Tokyo 2020.”
