STUDENTS from Chepstow School enjoyed a day at Chepstow Racecourse on Monday 22nd June as part of the Sports Rangers programme.

The pupils, who were from the sports journalism team, were given an insight into the preparation, marketing, event management, catering, and commercial activities that go into hosting an event, along with a brief history of the sport.

Following a tour of the course which also took in the weighing room, the pupils were treated to a Q&A session with race-day presenter Ed Nicholson and jockey William Twiston-Davies.

Twiston-Davies explained the discipline and skill required to be a jockey, and talked through his raceday preparations.

Assistant headteacher of Chepstow School, Jamie Goddard, said: "We were thrilled with the trip and the support provided by the team at Chepstow Racecourse.

"The visit will form the basis of a sports journalism project, which is designed to raise literacy standards. The access and insight provided by the visit has certainly fired the students' imaginations."

Phil Bell, executive director for Chepstow Racecourse, said: "We were happy to support this initiative, and were delighted by the students' enthusiasm.

"They all seemed to enjoy the visit to the parade ring, and the view from their hospitality box.

"Chepstow School is one of our closest neighbours, so we were delighted to be able to lend our support and strengthen our ties to the local community. I sincerely hope that the visit has inspired the next generation of sports journalists."
