THE old Severn Bridge will be shut on 24th August to make way for hundreds of runners.

The first Severn Bridge Half Marathon will be held on the bank holiday weekend raising money for St David's Hospice and Barnardos.

Negotiations have been ongoing for the past year, with all relevant authorities now agreeing to close the bridge for a maximum of four hours to allow the runners to set off.

Organised by Forest-based Rogue Runs boss Paul Dodd, the half marathon will begin on the bridge, taking runners across the river before heading up Thornbury Road, along the lanes and back over the bridge, this time using the pedestrian footpath.

"My wife and I are both members of Chepstow Harriers and run on the bridge a lot. We love it, it is like being caught between the land and the sky.

"A lot of marathons are held in the cities, but this will be a much better view for runners."

Those interested in taking part will be able to apply online soon. Keep an eye on the Beacon for details.
