OVER twenty volunteers from Magor Brewery celebrated World Environment Day by helping to transform a community garden at County Hall in Usk on Monday 6th June.

Established last summer The Usk Community Garden provides a formal pollinator area to encourage insects, a home for nine beehives and a communal growing area for fruit and vegetables. It was funded through the Welsh Government Nature Fund - Pollinators for Life project.

The workers swapped their usual day’s work of brewing beer to give back to the community and celebrate the ‘United Nations World Environment Day’. 20 volunteers from the brewery put in a shift weeding and installing plants designed to attract bees and other pollinators. The plants were donated by AB Inbev and are listed as ‘Perfect for Pollinators’ by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Brewery manager Tony Monteiro said: “Our dream is to be the best beer company bringing people together for a better world.

“We are committed to brewing beer the better world way, embedding sustainability and social responsibility throughout our entire value chain, from seed to sip.

“At the heart of that dream is collective action.

“We’re proud of our colleagues who helped to transform the garden, which can be enjoyed by all in the community.

“Throughout our brewing process, we manage our water use by striving for more crop-per-drop and driving efficiency into our operations. And we are constantly working to improve our efficiency at each step along our value chain.

“We are committed to protecting the environment across our value chain; and we volunteer our time in collaboration with partners to celebrate the environment, every day.”
