Employees from Magor Brewery celebrated World Environment Day by swapping their usual day's work of brewing beer to roll up their sleeves and get to work with Keep Wales Tidy.

The team from Magor Brewery joined Keep Wales Tidy's expert officers last Wednesday (5th June) to clean up and remove waste from the 'reens' (artificial drains) in the area around the brewery between Undy and Caldicot.

Thirty volunteers worked for over five hours and filled four eight-yard skips with over six tonnes of rubbish.

The team cleaned a total of three sites, including Summerway reen near Caldicot station and ditches on the back road to Undy, which are part of the local green transport network on the coastal path and cycle routes through the area.

The brewery uses the drainage system as part of its operations so was keen to contribute to removing rubbish from it.  Staff filled a skip on each of these sites.

On Garthalan Drive in Caldicot, the volunteers filled two skips with rubbish and gathered another skip's worth from the open space among the bushes and the ditch alongside.

Tony Monteiro, brewery manager at AB InBev UK's Magor Brewery, said: "AB InBev UK has a significant role to play in protecting the environment and we were delighted to work alongside Keep Wales Tidy on this event.

"The clean-up was hard work but great fun and our team learned new skills as well as improving the quality of the local surroundings for the community and wildlife alike.

"I am very proud of what the team here at Magor has achieved to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our business.

"We already recycle more than 99 per cent of all our waste and we are always looking for new ways to reduce our impact on the environment and achieve our dream: To be the Best Beer Company in a Better World."

Louise Tambini, projects director for Keep Wales Tidy, said: "Keep Wales Tidy's team building days are a great way for companies to work together and give staff a real sense of achievement."
