A FRIENDSHIP project for people with disabilities, run by Monmouthshire County Council, has been awarded a Social Care Wales Accolade for Innovative and Creative Solutions.

The awards go to organisations and teams from across Wales to recognise, celebrate and share excellent practice in social work and social care - recognising projects that make a positive difference to the lives of the people they support.

Members of MCC’s ‘My Mates’ project and the team that run it - Sarah Seabourne, project Manager, Kemmine Parrish project Coordinator and Janet Cox project Facilitator -  received the award at City Hall, Cardiff. They were accompanied by Shelley Welton, MCC Lead Commissioner.

My Mates began in 2016. The unique and transformational project is led by members who strive for independence and equality.

The project helps people with disabilities form confident friendships and live “with passion and purpose”.

Members are provided with advice and information by the My Mates Coordinators in a safe and supportive environment. The team offer professional advice and guidance and are C-Card registered with NHS Wales.

Due to its success the project has expanded to include people from across Gwent, the project now has 115 members.

Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health, Penny Jones said: “I am absolutely over the moon. The success of the project has been through the innovative approach of council officers and the enthusiasm and dedication of My Mates members. Friendship is vital to a healthy outlook on life, My Mates is helping so many people to go to new places, make new acquaintances and have fun!”
