Joyce Hoare celebrated her 86th birthday, not with cake or a party, but with a 700 metre zip-wire challenge last Saturday (26th October).

Joyce, a member of Chepstow St Pierre golf club, decided to take on this daredevil stunt at the Diving Centre in Chepstow to raise money for Action for Hearing Loss Cymru, the club's Lady Captain's Charity of the year.

According to the Diving Centre's website, the zip-wire is said to be: "one of the UK's longest, tallest and fastest zip slides, running the 700 metre length of the centre's quarry." The cliff edge is 70 metres high and the zip wire reaches speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.

Mike Smith, friend of Joyce, said: "Joyce wanted to do the zip wire after discovering her neighbour, aged in his 70s, did the challenge and was said to be the oldest person to do the zip wire. On hearing the news, Joyce decided she wanted to be the oldest person, and volunteered to take part."

Joyce said: "I was absolutely terrified before I did it, the wind was blowing very hard and when I heard people screaming on the zip-wire before me, I wondered what on earth I'd let myself in for.

"When I started, the wind blew me to face the other way so I ended up going down the course backwards, it was quite something.

"There were so many golfers present and so many people shouting for me. I can't believe how supportive everyone has been. The young lads at the Diving Centre were wonderful too.

"The Lady Captain's Charity of the year is Action for Hearing Loss Cymru so I thought I'd be able to raise some money for them by doing the zip wire. I don't know if I'm allowed to say at this stage how much I've raised, but it was a very generous amount. I cannot believe how much support I've received from everyone.

"Someone suggested I try wing walking for next year, but I don't think I'll be doing anything like that anytime soon."

Action for Hearing Loss Cymru supports around 530,000 people who have hearing loss in Wales and seek to tackle feelings of isolation and discrimination.
