Athletics experience for Monmouth soldier

By Liam O'Callaghan in Local People

A MONMOUTH soldier has had a dream posting this week, working at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London.

Corporal Ben Jones has been serving at the competition, giving him a front row seat to some of the world’s best athletes.

Some of the highlights of the week for Cpl Jones have been raising the Union Jack during the opening ceremony, watching Mo Farah win Team GB’s only medal so far, gold in the men’s 10km and holding the Jamaican flag at the medal ceremony for the men’s 100 metre race.

The flag was for Usain Bolt who finished third in his final competitive race.

The posting would have been particularly enjoyable for Cpl Jones who has his own athletics background in the hammer throw, an event which he participated in for the Army Athletics Association.

After the event Cpl Jones will return to Woodbridge, Suffolk where he is usually stationed.
