South East Wales Cricket League Division One - Pentyrch First XI (159 all out) lost to Sudbrook First XI (160-9) by one wicket
SUDBROOK skipper’s decision to ask Pentyrch to bat first, proved a wise one although the result was in doubt until the last over.
Pentyrch’s openers started well but Jonathan Lewis and Mark O’Leary removed Todd Wilcox (19) and Jamie Mills (33) respectively and despite the efforts of Lewis Coates (35) and Dominic Grossett (25 not out), Sudbrook’s bowlers took wickets at regular intervals, restricting the home side to 158 all out
Scott O’Leary (3-30), Mark O’Leary (2-27) and Watkins (4-30) did the damage.
“In reply we again struggled early on,” admitted Watkins later.
“Only Ross Lewis offered any resistance with his eighth consecutive half-century but he was caught on 58, and at 88-6, defeat looked on the cards.
“But Mark O’Leary and Greg Shaw put on a brilliant 50 plus partnership to take us to the brink of victory.
“When they departed, Greg on 33 and Mark on 37, we still needed two runs from the final over to win.
“The first delivery was a dot, and then we lost two wickets off consecutive deliveries.
“With three balls left and still two runs short, our last batsman, Ian Simmonds hit a cover drive and when it was fielded the wicketkeeper missed it and we ran two byes to win.
”It was very pleasing to come through a tight match as we have been on the receiving end a few times this year and to see Mark and Greg contribute with an excellent match-winning partnership.
“We host Newbridge this Saturday which will be very tough, but we welcome back a few key players and a win would open up the title race again.”
