THE former Clarks shoe shop in Monmouth could be converted into an opticians if planning consent is given.
An application has been submitted to convert the currently vacant 25 Monnow Street, the former home of Clarks, into a branch of the opticians Specsavers.
Specsavers already has a shop in Monmouth, currently located at the smaller premises at 43 Monnow Street.
Specsavers’ potential new home in the town, which is Grade II listed, has been vacant for some time, and the application seeks to make a number of alterations. These include modifications to the existing shop frontage to remove the ‘arcade’ aspect and interior alterations including new stud partition walls, while introducing shop fittings, display areas and suspended ceilings.
David Cummings, Chairman of Monmouth and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce commented: “The Chamber very much welcomes the plans that have been submitted for changes to 25 Monnnow Street for prospective new tenant Specsavers.
“This former Clarks store, in our main shopping area, has been empty for several years and has had a negative effect on the appearance of our generally very buoyant retail sector. We welcome the statement of confidence by Specsavers that they have chosen to move to larger premises in Monmouth.
“The changes to the frontage not only bring the appearance of the property into keeping with the rest of the street, but remove a stopping off point for those revellers with full bladders on their way back home from a night out.”
